Smallmouth also known by the locals as footballs are caught around Lake Erie’s Western Basin island’s and reefs. Rocky structures support large resident populations of smallmouth bass and walleye which is why the near shore rocky western basin reef complex right off my marina offers smallmouth and walleye fishing !
The best time to fish for Smallmouth Bass in the Western Basin of Lake Erie including the Canadian waters around Pelee Island is mid-July through October. Three to five lb. fish are very common.
The Ohio and Canadian season for smallmouth bass , largemouth bass and spotted bass, opens the last Saturday in June. There is a 14-inch minimum size limit, and the daily bag limit for both species is 5 fish in the aggerate per person per day in Ohio waters.

Pound for pound smallmouth bass are the hardest fighting fish in the lake.
Canadian and Ohio seasons open the last Saturday of June.
Drifting or at anchor with live bait, soft craws or bass minnows.
Jigs and artificial lures also work well. They will also take a Round Gobi eagerly.
