Fishing Lake Erie for Smallmouth Bass is unequaled.
This scrappy jumper will test your skill to land the fish. It will fight harder pound for pound then any
fresh water specie.
Bass are located all over the lake, from the Islands to all the reefs and along the shoreline that has a rocky or gravel bottom.
Canadian waters offers the best action primarily because Canada has a closed season. The season opens each June on the third Saturday.
Live bait (soft craws) is widely used on a Carolina type rig. Tube jigs can also be effective, but live bait is by far the best.
The Ohio state record , set a couple of years ago was 9 1/2 pounds!
The Ohio and Canadian Islands offer some of the finest bass available anywhere.
16 to 18 inch Bass are common.
The most productive time to battle this scrappy "jumper" is August through October.
Pound for pound it is the hardest fighting fish in the lake
Method: Drifting or at anchor with live bait, softcraws or bass minnows.
Jigs and artificial lures also work well.
Limits: Ohio 5 per person per day, and must be 14 inches in length.
Canada 6 per person.
We support catch and release. This is a resource that isn't easily renewed. Bass grow much slower then Walleye. You may keep a trophy size fish.
To be awarded the "Fish Ohio" award, The fish must be 20 inches.
Many in this class are taken yearly.
