Smallmouth Bass catches currently average 14-17 inches, with many larger fish in the 18-20 inch range.  

Ohio's State Record smallmouth bass was caught here in Lake Erie's Western Basin islands area,

weighing in at 9.5 lbs. and 23.5 inches in length!

The Ohio and Canadian Islands offer some of the finest small mouth bass fishing available in the world.

Canadian and Ohio seasons open the last Saturday of June.
16 to 18 inch Bass are common.
The most productive time to battle this scrappy "jumper" is July through October.
Pound for pound it is the hardest fighting fish in the lake.

 Drifting or at anchor with live bait, softcraws or bass minnows.
Jigs and artificial lures also work well.
Tube Jigs with green pumpkin seed or any dark green color will work well early in the year.
They will also take a Round Gobi eagerly.

 

Limits: Ohio 5 per person per day. 14 Inch size limit.
Ohio now has a closed season from May 1 until the last Saturday in June.
Canada 6 per person.
To be awarded the "Fish Ohio" award, The Bass must be 20 inches.
